APRM 21st Anniversary

share

The 9th of March marks a significant milestone as we celebrate 21 years since the establishment of the APRM in 2003. Our APRM remains a distinctive institution, born from the vision of African Heads of States and Government, dedicated to fostering political stability, economic growth, sustainable development, and accelerated economic integration through the exchange of experiences and the promotion of best practices.

As we commemorate our 21st Anniversary, we seize this opportunity to encourage the 11 AU Member States yet to join us to consider the clarion call for Universal Accession and voluntarily embrace the APRM's mandate. Additionally, we call upon all 44 Member States to rejuvenate their national structures and utilize all available APRM tools, such as Country Reviews and Targeted Reviews, to advance our shared vision outlined in Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.

Particularly in today's rapidly evolving global landscape, Africa must remain steadfast in upholding its core values of democracy and good governance. The APRM expresses gratitude to all stakeholders who have contributed to the growth and relevance of our Pan-African institution. As a significant number of AU Member States prepare for elections this year, the APRM, in collaboration with the AGA-APSA family, stands poised to preserve our hard-won gains amid challenges such as Unconstitutional Changes of Government and setbacks in the rule of law and democratic principles across the continent.

We stand ready to support AU Member States, non-state actors, civil society organizations, policymakers, and youth in safeguarding and promoting democratic values, ensuring electoral integrity, fostering acceptance of credible election outcomes, and enhancing public confidence in the electoral process.

I extend heartfelt appreciation to the APR Forum of Heads of State and Government, APRM Panel of Eminent Persons, APRM Focal Points, APRM National Governing Councils, APRM National Secretariats, and Strategic Partners for their steadfast support and confidence in the APRM. As our institution continues to strengthen, let us not waver in the unique support and confidence that the African people have placed in us.

Finally, I express deep gratitude to the dedicated staff of the APRM Continental Secretariat, whose unwavering commitment has been instrumental in supporting Member States and promoting the unique mandate of the APRM. As we reach this age of maturity at 21, the expectations of the African people are high, and we are committed to meeting them with even greater dedication and effectiveness.
