Johannesburg – 11–12 May 2026 – The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Continental Secretariat participated in a co-creation workshop convened towards the development of an Africa Critical Minerals Programme. Hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sandton, South Africa, the gathering brought together representatives from African Union (AU) institutions, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), United Nations agencies and development partners.
The two-day engagement provided a platform to advance key objectives of the workshop, particularly to clarify coordination mechanisms among AU Member States, RECs, continental institutions, and development partners in support of a coherent African approach to critical minerals governance, value addition, and regional industrial development. It also sought to build a shared understanding of Africa’s development challenges and priorities in alignment with continental normative frameworks, including the Africa Mining Vision and the African Green Minerals Strategy, while contributing to the definition of the strategic architecture of the proposed programme
Representing the APRM, Ms. Karabo Mochebelele highlighted recommendations contained in the APRM’s Africa Governance Report 2025 (AGR25) on natural resource governance. The report provides a synopsis of key findings on land, marine, and mineral resource governance. In addition, the Secretariat highlighted the importance of African countries adopting clear, strategic, and proactive approaches to mineral resource governance, with particular emphasis on strengthening legal and policy frameworks, optimising value realisation, and enhancing revenue management systems.
Moreover, the APRM anchored these findings within the workshop's broader discussions, while emphasising the importance of strengthening regional and continental collaboration to advance Africa’s collective interests in the critical minerals sector.
APRM’s participation in this engagement is part of its ongoing efforts to support Participating States in strengthening natural resource governance and implementing the recommendations of the Africa Governance Report 2025.
