Launch of the APRM Namibia Country Review Report


Windhoek, Namibia. 07 March 2024, The Namibian Country Review Report was launched by His Excellency, Dr Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, at a ceremony held at the State House of Namibia on March 7, 2024, in Windhoek, Namibia. The Launch served as a platform for dialogue, reflection, and discussion on the way forward in implementing the recommendations from the country report. It marks a significant milestone in Namibia's journey in implementing the APRM and underlines Namibia’s commitment to transparent governance, accountability, and socio-economic development.

The launch event was attended by the Lead Panel Member for Namibia, H.E Dr Abdoulie Janneh as well as senior government officials including the Vice President, Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Dr Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, members of Cabinet including Hon. Obeth M. Kandjoze, Director-General of the National Planning Commission which hosts the offices of the APRM National Secretariat.

Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, former Member of the APR Panel of Eminent Persons and former Lead Panel Member for Namibia has also participated together with members of Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from civil society organizations and other stakeholders’ delegates from the Namibian APRM’s National Governing Council, delegates from the Continental Secretariat and from the APRM national structures representing Ghana, Sierra Leone, and South Africa.

Namibia acceded to the APRM at the APR Forum of Heads of State and Government meeting on 28 January 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as the 36th APRM Member State. H. E the late Dr Hage Godfred Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia expressed his support of the APRM as a process that plays a pivotal role in enabling Africa to achieve the noble aspirations and Development Goals of Agenda 2063.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, President Nangolo Mbumba emphasized the importance of the APRM process in promoting positive change and fostering national development. He commended the efforts of all stakeholders involved in the review process and reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to implementing the recommendations outlined in the report. H.E. Dr Mbumba also recalled that, as the late President, H.E Dr Hage G. Geingob who started the implementation of the APRM Process in Namibia did not see its full accomplishment in the Land of the Brave, the launch of the report was a bittersweet moment, with the nation still mourning his passing.

H.E. Dr Mbumba commended Prof. Eddy Maloka, the outgoing CEO of the APRM Continental Secretariat, for his tireless dedication to governance improvement across the continent. Additionally, he congratulated H.E. Ambassador Marie Antoinette Rose Quatre on her appointment as the new CEO, heralding a new chapter in the APRM’s quest for excellence.

A vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Betty Schroder, Vice President of the National Governing Council. Furthermore, she extended the Namibia APRM’s gratitude to all stakeholders for their responsibility and active participation in the national APRM Process. Finally, she commended President Mbumba for his courage in taking up the challenge and continuing the legacy of the late President.
