TRANSLATOR-DOCUMENTATION CONSULTANT

 

  • BACKGROUND

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is an African Union (AU) organ headquartered in Midrand, South Africa that was established in 2003 by the African Union Heads of State and Government with the primary purpose of fostering practices that lead to political stability, high economic growth, sustainable and inclusive development, as well as accelerated regional and continental integration. It seeks to rectify underlying deficiencies in governance and socio-economic development processes among member states of the African Union. The APRM covers four thematic areas: (i) Democracy and political governance; (ii) Economic management and governance; (iii) Corporate governance; (iv) Socio-economic development; (v) State Resilience to Shocks and Disasters (SRSD), and (vi) and E-Governance. Participating States go through detailed review processes, including consultations with government, the private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders, culminating in a peer review exercise at the level of Heads of State and Government.

  • OBJECTIVES

To support the effective execution of APRM’s mandate, the Conference Management Unit (CMU) seeks to ensure timely, high-quality translation, revision, editing, and documentation services. These services are essential for the processing of working documents, review reports, meeting outcomes, and communication material in official languages of the African Union (AU).

In light of the above, the APRM intends to recruit one (1) qualified international individual consultant to serve primarily as a Translator and Documentation Consultant. The consultant will provide professional services in translationeditingrevisionproofreading, and documentation management, and may also be called upon to provide interpretation services as needed.

  • SCOPE OF SERVICE
  1. Translation and Language Services
  • Translate documents from English to French and from French to English, including but not limited to review reports, technical studies, strategic plans, speeches, communiqués, correspondence, and meeting documentation.
  • Revise and edit translations done by external consultants, to ensure accuracy, consistency, clarity, and adherence to the APRM style guide.
  • Proofread and edit French and English documents prior to publication or dissemination.
  • Occasionally provide interpretation services during meetings, workshops, or webinars.
  1. Documentation and Records Management
  • Ensure proper classification, version control, and archiving of APRM working documents (both original and translated).
  • Support the compilation and formatting of final documents, including harmonizing headers, footers, page numbers, fonts, and institutional identity.
  • Assist in preparing meeting documentation packages, final outcome documents, reports, and summary records.
  • Maintain and update the electronic filing system for translation and documentation projects, in line with APRM records management procedures.
  • Support the development of terminology databases and glossaries, in collaboration with the Principal Translator and thematic experts.
  • QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Educational Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree from a recognized institution with at least five (5) years of relevant professional experience in translation, revision, editing, proofreading, or documentation management;

OR

  • A tertiary qualification (Bachelor’s degree, Postgraduate Diploma, or Honours) from a recognized institution with at least seven (7) years of relevant experience.

Additional Qualifications and Assets

  • A degree and experience in TranslationConferenceInterpretationLinguistics, or a related field from a recognized tertiary institution is an advantage;
  • Training or experience in conference documentation or records management is desirable;
  • Familiarity with the African Union and/or APRM documentation standards and protocols;
  • Proficiency in CAT tools and translation software (e.g., Trados, Wordfast, Multitrans);
  • Experience in formatting complex documents, layout editing, and using MS Word styles/templates;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple document versions and deadlines.
  • DUTY STATION

The consultant will be based at the APRM Continental Secretariat, located in Midrand, South Africa, and is expected to work on-site unless otherwise agreed.

  • Selection will be conducted through a competitive process, evaluating candidates based on qualifications, relevant experience, and demonstrated ability to meet the requirements outlined above.

Requests for clarification must be submitted no later than seven (7) days before the bid closing date. Any requests received after this deadline will not be considered. The short-list and the selection procedure shall be in done in accordance with the AU Procurement Manual, version of April 2024.

Expressions of interest must be submitted via email to tender@aprm-au.org on or before 07th August 2025 at 11.00 SAST. The bids shall be opened on 07th August 22025 at 11.00 SAST.
